Art
At Our Lady of the Rosary School, our vision is to transform the lives of our pupils within a Catholic environment by nurturing the wellbeing of each child, promoting the highest academic achievement and instilling a lifelong love of learning. We aim to fulfil our school strap line ‘Faith, Love, Learning’ by igniting a thirst for knowledge and a desire to achieve through an engaging and creative curriculum that promotes the highest academic achievements and prepares our pupils to be successful in their adult life.
Our Vision…
At Our Lady of the Rosary, we aim for pupils to have the ability and freedom to express themselves creatively through art, craft and design. Our Art curriculum develops creativity, fires the imagination and enables the pupils to communicate thoughts and emotions through art.
We want our pupils to have an appreciation for the work of significant, well-known, historical and local artists as well as those who use modern day art and design to reflect their culture, background and beliefs. Our pupils will be inspired by their work, putting the artists techniques and designs into practice when planning and designing their own artwork. The pupils will be able to explore their ideas, plan their designs, create and evaluate their artwork, make comparisons between their work and the work of an artist, all whilst making experimental, purposeful and critical choices.
As a school, we share and celebrate our artwork with pride and express that every child is an Our Lady of the Rosary Artist.
Intent
At Our Lady of the Rosary Primary School, we want all pupils to be masters of a variety of artistic techniques. With the support of a spiral curriculum, we ensure that the pupils are provided with progressive opportunities to revisit and practice various art and design skills throughout their Art and Design journey. We provide a high quality, broad and balanced art and design curriculum, which engages, inspires and challenges pupils. It equips them with the knowledge and skills to become proficient in the strands of drawing and painting, printing, sculpture. We develop our pupils understanding of colour, form, texture, shape, pattern and their ability to use materials and processes to communicate ideas, feelings and meanings. Pupil’s aesthetic awareness enables them to make informed, critical responses about their work and that of others. We ensure that pupils know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
EYFS
Expressive Arts and Design Creating with Materials ELG Children at the expected level of development will:
- Safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form, and function;
- Share their creations, explaining the process they have used; Beginning in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the pupils will be provided with opportunities to explore and experiment with a variety of materials and they will be taught how to make informed choices about which materials to use for different purposes.
Key Stage 1
As the pupils move into Key Stage 1, they will begin to develop their knowledge of colour, texture, line, shape and form further with the introduction of sketchbooks. The pupil’s confidence in discussing the work of artists and their links to different cultures should progress as new knowledge is taught and revisited. The pupils will be able to name the artists that have played a part in influencing their own artwork.
Key Stage 2
When moving into Key Stage 2, the pupils will begin to refine their art and design skills and techniques, practicing in their sketchbooks and building towards their final pieces. They will have the ability to reflect and evaluate their artwork and have the opportunity to make improvements. As a school community, we encourage everyone as artists to be proud of their work and share it with others through class or year group galleries.
Implementation
- At the start of each unit of work pupils will review previous learning and will have the opportunity to share what they already know.
- Art is taught throughout the school from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to Year 6. In Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, Art is taught three times a year in half termly blocks.
- Our Art and Design curriculum is structured around three strands of learning: drawing, printing and painting, 3D and sculpting.
- Each unit of work has a medium term plan and introduces the pupils to new knowledge and Art and Design skills and techniques.
- The pupils have the opportunity to revisit previously taught skills as well as develop new ones.
- Within each block of learning, the pupils will be exploring the work of a variety of significant artists, craft makers and designers, both modern and from history.
- Pupils have the opportunity to use different art mediums for painting and drawing. They will develop their use of materials for sculpture and will manipulate different materials and use a variety of techniques to create 3D forms.
- Pupils in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 will develop sketchbooks, which showcase their learning and show their progression of art skills and techniques.
- Pupils are encouraged to have the freedom to experiment, explore, plan, design, create and evaluate their artwork, referring back to plans and designs, seeing if the outcome matches.
- Consideration is given to how greater depth will be taught, learnt and demonstrated within each lesson, as well as how learners will be supported in line with the school’s commitment to inclusion.
- Assessment is informed by observations during lessons, verbal feedback, pupil voice and work scrutiny.
- Summative judgements (Working Towards/Working At/Working above age-related Expectations) are recorded for Geography at the end of each term (KS1 and KS2).
- An end of year overall summative judgement is made in end of year reports for all KS1 and KS2 pupils (EYFS profile assessment - ELG Understanding the World).
- Effective use of educational visits and visitors are planned to enrich and provide first-hand learning experiences for pupils.
- Cross-curricular links are planned for and allow children to deepen their understanding across the curriculum, including the use of history, mathematics and science.
Impact
Our pupils will become confident, proficient, creative artists with the ability to express themselves through our three strands of drawing, printing and painting and 3D and sculpting, allgained from meaningful, memorable learning experiences that will last a lifetime.
Our pupils will develop a richer vocabulary, which will enable to articulate their understanding of, taught concepts. Our pupils will display a knowledge of art history by being able to talk about significant artists and the variety of techniques that they have learned from them. Pupils know how to take inspiration from other artists, craft makers and designers, plan a piece of artwork and evaluate it with the consideration of its audience.
We have high aspirations for all pupils, which will see them through to further study, work and be successful in their adult life.
