Our Lady of the Rosary

Whole School Curriculum

At Our Lady of the Rosary School, our vision is to transform the lives of our pupils within a Catholic environment by nurturing the wellbeing of each child, promoting the highest academic achievement and instilling a lifelong love of learning. We aim to fulfil our school strap line ‘Faith, Love, Learning’ by igniting a thirst for knowledge and a desire to achieve through an engaging and creative curriculum that promotes the highest academic achievements and prepares our pupils to be successful in their adult life.

Our Vision

At Our Lady of the Rosary Primary School, we are dedicated to the development of the whole child within the love of a Catholic community. Pupils are valued for their own unique God given gifts and talents. We have designed a curriculum to enable our pupils to achieve their full potential and provide opportunities to raise aspirations so that they are well-rounded individuals, ready to move onto the next stage of their education.

Our school strap line is Faith, Love and Learning and underpins everything we do.

Faith

We put Christ at the centre of all that we do.

  • Pupils are taught to be respectful and inclusive of all members of our school and wider community using their understanding of Catholic Social Teaching principles.
  • Our Faith and values are at the core of the curriculum and pupils learn about different groups, communities, cultures and viewpoints.
  • Pupils receive well-planned personal, social and health education, which enables them to become kind and respectful citizens who understand their role in society, and who are ready to contribute to the wider community.

Love

  • Diversity is celebrated and respected and pupils, staff and parents model this.
  • All our pupils, regardless of ability and SEND, are provided a curriculum, which challenges their thinking and produces high standards.
  • We aim for all our pupils make to progress in line with or above their ability.
  • We foster a positive learning environment, which links to scripture and the Our Lady Learning Ladder.
  • We encourage positive relationships between both staff and pupils and have high expectations for behaviour for learning.
  • We believe all pupils are made in the image and likeness of God and encourage them to use their talents to become the best version of themselves.

Learning

  • Reading is the gateway to unlocking the curriculum and here at Our Lady we ensure pupils have opportunities to read for pleasure, read to develop their comprehension skills and read to gain knowledge and use this as foundations for the future.
  • Through our enquiry based curriculum we stimulate and nurture our pupils independent thinking to enable them to apply their knowledge in a range of contexts.
  • Pupils are taught key knowledge in all subjects, which supports their understanding of the wider world around them.
  • Pupils are taught to question using their language skills and vocabulary, which is taught progressively throughout the curriculum.
  • Developing oracy skills is seen as a key foundation for pupils to become independent thinkers.
  • Pupils have opportunities to develop their resilience as learners: they are taught how to fail and try again, but also how to accept challenge from other pupils on their opinions and how to respond to this. The Our Lady learning ladder promoting positive behaviour reinforces this.
  • Units are carefully planned so that that the learning has a clear structure and is progressive in all areas; from key knowledge to skills to vocabulary.
  • Our Enquiry based curriculum ensures pupils develop their learning so they have the foundations in place to broaden and deepen their understanding. This is achieved through prior learning, teaching of key knowledge, retrieval and assessment.
  • Recall and retrieval is essential in building a pupil’s long-term memory to know more and remember more. There are well-planned retrieval tasks interspersed throughout the learning in all subjects to ensure pupils are retaining new knowledge.
